Paramedics on
Bikes Our
bike program started several years ago with the
completion of the Loveland Bike Trail. A need
was identified to handle emergencies on the bike
trail as well as at local events in the Township
and City parks. The bike medics just finished
the Tour of Loveland bike race this summer. Two
LSFD medics are equipped with first aid
supplies, oxygen and heart monitors strapped to
their mountain style bicycles. They are capable
of handling the same type emergencies that they
would encounter in a normal situation with an
ambulance.

Pedi med
 The
Loveland-Symmes Fire Department has teamed up
with the Loveland City School and other schools
in the area to insure the safety of “special
needs” children. The Pedi/Med program gathers
information from parents in the area on any
medical conditions that may be encountered
either at school or while home. This information
is collected and entered into a database kept at
the fire stations and Northeast Communications.
Once processed a number is given to the child’s
records. This number along with the child’s
name will be used to identify that the child’s
records are on file. A second copy will be given
to the schools and kept in their medical records
file. In the event of an emergency where 911 is
called and the child’s name or address is
entered into the dispatchers computer, the ID
number given to that information will pop up on
the screen. In the case that this happens
dispatchers will notify responding personnel of
the ID number. While responding to the scene
either at school or in the Loveland/Symmes
Township area, paramedics and EMT’s will have
this information on record in the apparatus.
This gives responding personnel the advantage to
view useful information such as the childs name,
address, medical information, family or friends
to notify, medications taken, allergies to
medication, and hospital preference. If a child
in the responding area has a rare form of a
disease, the Pedi/Med reps will research the
illness and have a special training session to
educate the Paramedics and EMT’s who may some
day respond to that child. Also with the program
numerous other benefits are offered. Trained
Fire and EMS personnel will perform home
inspections, train children to properly evacuate
the home in fire conditions, in some cases
distribute smoke detectors to home with children
with handicaps such as hearing impairments.

Senior med
 The
Senior/Med program is a list of information
gathered from residents that will help aid in
their care if an emergency should rise. It is on
a volunteer basis. Information gathered affords
paramedics and EMT’s to review crucial
information prior to their arrival on an
emergency call to a Senior/Med customer.
Information gathered is listed below:
• Name, age, address, and
phone number • Closest family/friend and
phone number • Emergency phone numbers •
Medications taken • Medication allergies •
Primary care physician • Hospital
preference • Any special circumstance that
might pertain to that individual
Senior/Med customers have an
interview with a trained representative in
person, or over the phone. The information is
then entered into a database that is accessible
to Northeast Communications Center and the rest
of the Loveland-Symmes Fire Department.
Customers are assigned a number that corresponds
with the information and this number is relayed
through Northeast Communications Center to the
responding units. The Loveland-Symmes apparatus
are assigned Senior/Med folders that contain
customers’ information. Trained
Representatives cover 3 shifts, and are
available to customers any day of the week. Upon
request, representatives will go to the homes of
the customers to conduct interviews, take vital
signs, update information, perform home
safety-inspections, deliver reflective address
signs for quick response, and evaluate any “special
needs customers”. During periods of bad weather
Senior/Med Reps will initiate calls to
customers, and check their well being.
